On Page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is simply whatever technique you apply to a page or site for it to rank high in search engines and bring in free organic traffic.
The means you use in achieving this ranking can either be white hat or black hat and both processes require technical, analytical and creative skills to achieve.
White hat on page SEO can be seen as doing it right way that does not annoy Google and other search engines.
See this post as a tutorial that will teach you these white hat tactics.
While the black hat on page SEO is using manipulative means to achieve top ranking.
Usually Google is getting better at spotting sites that use this technique which is why they rarely last at the top.
Black hat SEO techniques exist and remain as powerful, but will not favor your site’s ranking on the long run.
If you intend to make it to the top of Google’s search ranking a, white hat SEO techniques will always be recommended.
You remain in search engines good books and retain your ranking as long as you offer quality.
While off page SEO like link building has its power to improve ranking, it still doesn’t take away the fact that Google values user experience.
This is where on page tactics for page optimization comes into play.
Let us take a look at some of the techniques you will apply to your page to get it to the top of SERP.

On Page SEO Techniques That Improves Pages Ranking Fast
Don’t Block Google From Crawling Your Site
Granting access to Google bots and other search engines is the first techniques we’ll be talking about first.
It is common sense.
For you to rank in Google’s search results, you need to get indexed in the first place.
For your domain to be indexed your site needs to be crawled.
For your site to be crawled you need to ensure you grant access to search engine bots.
But when your robot.txt file is blocking search engine bots from crawling your site properly, your pages don’t get indexed and they don’t rank.
For your pages to get the ranking they deserve, ensure that you did not mistakenly block your site.
I know most people that suffer from this situation did not mean to make that happen.
It most times has to do with either clicking a button they shouldn’t have clicked in the first place, or they tampered with their robot.txt file.
Which is why you should leave the programming and coding aspects of your site for the professionals – unless you really know what you are doing.
Tampering your robot.txt file can really affect the way Google bots crawl your site. So be sure of your coding ability before tampering your robot.txt file.
What is a robot.txt file?
There are technical and simple ways of defining robot.txt file.
But for the sake of readers that are not into the geek aspect of their blog or website, I will explain it the way a newbie can understand.
Think of your site’s robot.txt file as a tour guide for search engine bots, a guide that tells them which page to access and which one not to.
When done right, that is if you really know what you are doing, all pages you want index in search results will be crawled by the bots, indexed and ranked accordingly.
But when tampered by a novice, to Google bots, it feels like you hired a tour guide that knows nothing about the site.
So rather than guide the bots to crawls your site properly, here is what it does:
- Bots can either get confused and abandon your site.
- Or they can crawl but won’t index your site properly.
You want to make sure that your site is on the right side of these bots which are like Google’s messenger to go gather information about a site and its pages.
How To Know Your Robot.Txt File Is Not Blocking Your Site
One sure way to ensure that your site is not blocked and your robot.txt file is on the right track is by getting your site on Google’s webmaster tool.
When you submit your sitemap, it should state clearly after some days that your site it okay.
You observe this when the sitemap console is able to count how many pages and images are in your site.
This way you know that you site is not blocked.
However, if the Google bots have issues with your site, there is a message section in your console.
It should highlight the problems for suggest possible solution.
You can also check the crawl status of your site on the console. There you will check crawl errors if there are any and how many pages are blocked from being crawled.
This way you can confirm if there are the pages you want blocked or something is wrong.
Proper crawling of your site is the key to getting your site indexed in the first place for possible ranking.
It is like the basics.
When done right, you now have to worry about other on-page and off-page SEO technique you can apply to your site.
But first, ensure you get indexed.
Don’t Confuse Or Annoy A Website Visitor
Another on page optimization to carry out in your site is ensuring you don’t confuse or annoy your visitors.
There are lots of speculations about what Google really wants from a page to rank it.
When you take a look at their guidelines and algorithms, you will notice they all point to quality of a page and user experience.
Ranking your site now or later all points to having a quality page that satisfies users.
But when your site confuses or annoys users, then you are applying to be blacklisted by Google.
Someone might ask, how do I know my site is not confusing or annoying my users?
Well I’ll tell you.
Here are some things that make your visitors click the back button whenever they visit your site.
Using Shady Practice To Attract Visitors
There are site owners that use deceiving headlines to get ranked in search engines, only for visitors to come to the site and find something else.
This is most times used by black hat SEO, to attract visitors and most times these pages don’t last at the top.
Take for instance; the headline you are ranking for says weight loss tips.
User clicks on it to come to your site to find poker or casino games.
Sometimes, people rank these pages only to redirect users to other pages they want to promote.
It can be really annoying for users.
Besides, this can also be classified as “door way pages” by Google and they seriously frown at it.
You want to ensure that you deliver in your pages, what you promised in your title.
Slow Site Load Time
I assume you already know this by now, site speed is a ranking factor.
Which is why you should ensure that you invest in a reliable host.
You don’t want your readers waiting for your site to load for more than 5 seconds.
It can be annoying to users and Google doesn’t like it.
When your site takes time to load, you site is sure to rank low.
Slow load time for a site can be annoying for users, so ensure your avoid it.
Autoplay Music or Video
I know your intention to have music autoplay on site load might be to entertain your visitors.
But you should know that it might annoy lots of users or confuse them especially when you are not in the music niche.
It might be understandable if your site is for a particular artist or band.
Fans would love to hear their hit songs play when they get to the site.
But if that is not the case, you can add the music player to the side bar and allow visitors decide whether or not to play the song or video.
Clustered Site Layout
I understand that you want to monetize your site traffic.
It doesn’t mean you should cluster your site with so many banners and ads that tend to distract users from the main content.
When a site has clustered layout, it can negatively affect users’ experience thereby affecting your whole site rating.
Google wants your site to satisfy a user so while you are trying to monetize your traffic.
So ensure that your layout is not too distracting and cluttered.
This is another means site owners use in confusing and annoying their users.
Majority of internet users understand that site navigations are either at the top below the header or by the side.
Don’t hide your navigations in a way that users will have to search for it.
Even when you will assume that they might find it, to some users it might feel like a puzzle.
Visitors came to your site to find answers and not solve your navigation puzzle.
Majority of them will bounce off when they are done with your page.
Because they can’t find your navigation, browsing through your site becomes a challenge for them.
You want to ensure that your site is usable which is a strong signal for Google in ranking pages in a site.
Though they did not state it literally, you can be sure they have an algorithm for that.
Ensure your layout is clear and easy to browse through for visitors so as to reduce your bounce rate.
I have visited some sites that have contents I’ll love to read only to be told to register if I am to have access to these posts.
I think this is wrong.
It should be my choice to decide whether to register with a site or not.
I think if you offer quality on your site and allow registration, users will register willingly.
But when you make it a must, I’ll just have to leave and find the answers I’m looking for somewhere else.
It can be annoying as well as confusing for me.
Pop-ups And Interstitials
It is clear, there is an algorithm that will downgrade the quality rating of a site with pop-ups and interstitials.
This is for site owners that monetize their traffic through this means.
If this is you, and you value your organic traffic, then I suggest you get rid of them.
It could be possible that your site ranking low in search results could be a result of these ads.
Google understand that pop-ups and interstitials in sites negatively affect users’ experience.
Even at that, most browsers are now enabled to block pop-ups automatically.
This proves that users don’t like it, programmers that build browsers understand their users don’t like it, and so does Google.
No Contact Information
There are important pages that a site is supposed to have before being taken serious by Google.
One of them is a contact page.
Your users should have a means of contacting you for questions and enquiries. It can be frustrating when you have no means of reaching site owners.
These are important pages that prove to Google that you mean business and not just a random site that will go offline soon.
Even if Google loves them, common sense dictates that your site visitors will appreciate the presence of these pages in your site.
Too Much Flash
Users might understand if you have some flash in your site.
When there’s too much flash, you should know that it can affect user’s experience and Google doesn’t want that.
If your site contains too much flash, you will lose more of your mobile visitors.
Losing mobile visitors at a time Google’s algorithm is all about mobile first means you’ve lost majority of your site’s visitors and ranking.
Here’s the important message, ensure that user experience is improved in your site in general.
When users come to your site, ensure they find the answers they are looking for.
Most importantly make sure that navigating your site is not too difficult.
For some users, if a site is too complicated for them to navigate and browse through, they just bounce off to search for a much easier site.
If your site has high bounce rate, it only signals Google that your site has poor user experience.
That can get you ranking low.
Have A Responsive Design That Works On Mobile And Desktop
Responsive design never used to be a thing in the past, but right now it is an important ranking factor for them.
The world on already on mobile and most like majority of your site visitors will be doing so from their mobile devices.
More reason why optimizing your site for mobile view will be best for your business.
Ensure that you have responsive themes that work on both mobile and desktop.
If you are not using wordpress, ensure your site was designed by a programmer that knows what he or she is doing.
When Google crawls and index your site, they index mobile first.
This proves how important it is for them that sites have responsive themes.
Google will appreciate your site if it’s mobile responsive and not you creating another mobile page with less content.
Redirecting users to your mobile site use to be the thing but now things are changing fast.
Rather than redirection, build your site to adjust automatically to screen size for optimum user experience.
If Google finds out your site is not mobile friendly or the mobile version has less contents than the desktop version, you will lose ranking.
Less ranking means less visitors which will affect your income and bottom line.
Apart from that, visitors on their own will interact less with your site if navigation is a challenge for them.
So you see that Google lowering your rank will not be the only reason you are losing money and visitors.
How To Know Check Your Site Mobile Responsiveness
It is actually simple.
You can do so from your mobile device to see how it looks or use online tools.
Most online tools will give you stimulations of different mobile devices to check how your site looks like on them.
All you have to do is input your site link and choose your preferred device.
You should see how your site looks like in mobile version in less than 30 seconds when you enter your link.
If you see that your site is not satisfactorily mobile friendly, you should invest in a mobile theme or redesign your site.
Be Situated Local To Your Target Customer
There is a reason why local SEO is important for every site owner and business person.
It makes it easy to rank according to your locality and so you can get customers easily.
Unless your online business is of global appeal, you want to ensure that you have your business situated physically within your locality.
It is also important that you register with Google Business so they can verify your location.
Once that is done, your site will pop up when someone search for services you offer locally.
Take for instance;
When you search for laptop repairers in Google, search results are provided based on your location at that point.
Google assumes you are searching for businesses around your location that offer repair services.
So it provides you a list, their contact information, a map to their location and their website also.
The only businesses that are shown to you are the ones that registered with Google or those ones that Google got through other means.
The most important thing for them is to provide you the answers you are looking for as quick as possible.
Local SEO is known to be easier to dominate in ranking than national or international SEO.
So while you are trying to rank for certain keywords, ensure that your business is situated locally.
Verify your business location with Google and you will start ranking locally before going nationally and internationally.
How To Verify Your Business With Google
Since Google will really appreciate it if you verify your business with them, they have a post on how you can go about it.
- Read their guide on verifying your business listing on their page,
- Get verified through their different means
- And have your business start popping up in local search terms.
Like I said, it is easier to dominate local SEO if you learn a thing or two about it.
You can then grow your popularity from there to a much larger market.
Geotarget Your Site in Google Webmaster Console
The geotarget function in Google’s Webmaster Console gives you a peek to the level of importance placed on business location.
Google wants to know your location so it knows how to rank you.
The aim is to provide users the closest location to where they can find answers.
This improves user’s experience and keeps their users satisfied.
In your Webmaster Tools account, you have the option of deciding where you will want your traffic to be coming from.
It means you can tell Google where your target market is.
Before you carry out these settings in your console, Google at first automatically make assumptions on their own.
One way it does this is by ranking you based on your domain extension.
By default, it is assume that most domain names with a .com extension is for US traffic and its surrounding nations.
But if your domain name ends with a country’s specific locations like .co.uk or .ca or .in, then it means your business is for UK, Canada or Indian users respectively.
You’ll most likely notice majority of your traffic coming from these locations.
Automatically, domain names with country specific extensions have their country locked in the webmaster tools.
But if you have a .com domain name, you have the option of choosing a country where you would like your traffic to come from.
How To Select Your Geolocation In Webmaster Console
Go to Google Search Console
Click on the website (property) you want to set geographic target for
On the left, select Search Traffic > International Targeting
Click on the “Country” tab
Select the region you want to target or select “unlisted”
You are done.
Put Your Keyword Phrase At Least Once In Page Title
Your targeted keyword is the page title is a strong on page SEO tactic that indicates what the page is all about.
Bots are not humans and will need some signals to understand what a site is all about.
This is where niche selection comes into play.
When you want to write an article or build a page for your site, ensure that you have the keyword phrases you intend to rank for in the title.
And ensure that you deliver what you promised in the title in the post.
Why Inserting Target Keyword In Title Is Important For Ranking
It is common sense actually – doesn’t need much explanation.
Take for instance, the title of this post is On Page SEO Techniques to Improve Google Search Ranking.
The most important keywords there are On Page SEO and Google Search Ranking, both of which are interconnected.
From the word Technique, it proves that I want to teach users different ways they can use to rank a page and their site higher in Google SERP.
Having these key words in my title and strategically in my post is all I need to help bots understand what this page is all about.
How To Insert Target Keywords In Title For Better Ranking
Where you insert target keyword phrases you intend to rank for matters lot for SEO.
Since there is comparison between keywords in title and how often they appear in posts, you can have it anywhere within the title.
But it is highly recommended that you have your target keywords at the beginning of the title.
The closer your keyword is to the beginning of the title, the higher its relevance to ranking consideration by Google.
This is a strong technique that very few know and it is common with contents published by top ranking internet marketers.
This does not mean your target keywords must be at the beginning for every title.
Arrange your page title to be both captivating and meaningful to humans and understandable to bots.
If you have quality contents, ranking your pages shouldn’t be difficult.
Put Target Keyword Phrase At Least Once In Main Content
Spreading your target keywords in naturally in your post is another on page SEO technique you should apply to a page.
As this post’s title is talking about ways you can rank higher in search engine using on page SEO tactics, I am doing my best to fulfill the promise I made in this post.
As I teach you different techniques, naturally I am supposed to have these keyword terms in my post.
So once in a while, there are supposed to turn up as you scan through the page.
To humans reading the post, I am really impacting knowledge and to Google bots, I am really talking about my target keywords.
Now you apply this tip to every article you write and publish.
I assume that you will be typing your contents on Microsoft word software or any of your favorite writing tool.
As you write, ensure your keyword turns up at least once in a page.
You want to prove to both humans reading and bots crawling that you are on point.
It is at this junction we will talk about keyword density and LSI keywords.
As you continue reading through, you will come across headlines that go into details talking about them.
Writing page contents without including target keyword naturally makes no sense.
It proves you are writing out of point or your contents just got diverted or distracted.
This technique teaches you to remain on point with the topic and target key phrases.
Remember to write to the understanding of both humans and bots while retaining post quality.
Avoid Keyword Stuffing Main Content
Keyword stuffing is one on page SEO tactics that will affect your site negatively.
Coming to keyword insertion as a topic, understand that there is a technique to this.
Because you’ve read that inserting target keywords into pages is the key to ranking doesn’t mean you should abuse it.
Newbie bloggers make the mistake of adding keywords unnaturally to their post because they think that the more the merrier.
But I should warn you, keyword stuffing could get you banned and delisted from Google’s search results.
I believe the key to having your target keywords appear naturally in your content is to write naturally.
Writing in a conversational tone is the key.
While writing, ensure you sprinkle these keywords in ways that makes sense both to readers and bots.
Apart from Google identifying pages with unnatural percentage of keyword presence in a post, you should know that user experience is also affect negatively.
Would you continue reading this post if on page seo keeps popping up after every three or four words?
I don’t think so.
Same it is with writing for higher ranking.
Here is an example.
Remember that you are writing to teach and educate your reader.
How then will you achieve that aim if your fill your posts with keywords.
Your post will make no sense, both to readers and to machines that crawl your site.
Even at that, Google is getting better at understanding terms and grammar.
How do you think bots identify pages that were written in a hurry and pages that are unedited?
They now have algorithms that spots grammar and spelling errors.
Readability is a factor to be considered when writing your contents.
You want to make sure posts published are edited correctly for spelling and grammatical errors.
I don’t see how that will be possible if you stuff your contents with keywords.
One sure on page SEO rule that can either rank your page high or low in SERP is keyword density.
Having it within the safe range is the key to not getting blacklisted for Blackhat tactics.
What Is The Safe Keyword Density For Any Post?
Giving you the perfect percentage density of keywords for an optimized page can be tricky.
Remember I wrote earlier that the trick to writing a page that ranks well in Google is by writing naturally.
As you write naturally, these keywords and their LSI terms will flow in at a natural pace.
However, top ranking pages are known to have their target keywords in them within the range of 1%-3%.
Remember, these writers produced their contents in a natural tone which is obvious when you read their posts.
After writing a post, they edit and have tools that give them the percentage of every keyword they want to rank for.
If it’s less than required, they try to add more in a natural tone and when more they edit till its sounds right.
That said, the main aim here is to pass the information in a clear and natural tone so both readers and bots understand the page’s contents.
Optimize Your Meta Description To Have An Attractive SERP Snippet
Optimizing meta description and title that shows up in SERP snippet can increase your click thru rate.
Your on-page SEO changes will not be complete without considering these factors.
Click thru rate is another important factor that can make Google rank a page higher than another.
This is common with top ranking sites.
When pages appear for a search term, if more users are clicking on the second or third result than the first, it tells Google that users prefers them to the first.
They have no other option but to rank the one with the highest click thru rate higher than the rest.
It is possible that the first post that was demoted in search might have more contents than the second or third.
Google might not care this time about contents, they rank pages based on users’ preference and quality.
User experience is the main goal of their business.
Giving users what they want remains a priority for Google.
So the main question now is, how does a low ranking site get to the top?
What do bloggers do to make their post preferable to others in SERP?
Well I will tell you.
It is all about the title and meta description that shows up in SERP snippet.
How To Make User Prefer Your Post In Search Results
The secret is in the title.
You have to learn to write captivating titles that attract readers.
And with the right plugin, you can edit your post’s snippet in a way you prefer to have it show up in search results.
This can be made possible with Yoast SEO plugin.
Both the free and premium version gives bloggers the capability to edit both title and search snippet.
This means that the title appearing on your page can be different from the one appearing in search results.
One sure on page SEO trick that works is editing your title tags and meta description till you start ranking.
I am not saying you should change it every week, but after each editing, give it time to see if there will be changes or not.
If no movement, you can try another related key term.
Even when you hire SEO agencies, one of the changes they are most likely to make in your site is editing your post titles and meta description.
These things might not carry much weight in list of ranking factors, but they sure help in so many ways.
Properly editing your page title and snippet can help your page rank for desired keyword and also help bots know which keywords to rank you for.
So as part of your on page SEO campaign, ensure that you install Yoast SEO plugin.
With this plugin you can have these attractive titles and meta snippets rewritten.
You are sure to see positive changes in your rank and click thru rate.
If users prefer your post to others in the list as a result of better titles and snippet, Google will rank you higher.
Remember, Google uses more than 200 ranking signals – you never can tell which one will work in your favor.
Ensure The Main Content Of The Page Is High-Quality
This is by far the most important of all on-page SEO ranking factor.
The main reason you are writing any content to publish is because you want to teach, educate, solve problem, and impact knowledge.
While there are lots of other things you can do to a page to get it to rank higher in search results, the most important factor here is the user.
You should ensure that your page is of high quality and answers users’ questions.
When majority of the pages you have in your site is of high quality, I see no reason why the traffic shouldn’t flow in.
Promoting quality contents is easy because you can confidently ask for links from other webmasters.
Apart from getting organic traffic without backlinks, users that are impressed with your posts will link to you naturally.
This way you don’t go out begging for links.
I try to write quality posts for my readers first, and then worry about links later.
With the right posts backlinks will come on their own.
Winning the On-Page SEO Battle
You can achieve high ranking over time with quality pages.
This is where most of your time creating a useful site will be focused on.
If you win the battle of quality contents, I can assure you that you will win your ranking battle.
Common problem some bloggers and site owners have is quality content issue.
When majority of the posts in your site is of low quality, Google gives your domain a low rating.
With a low rating you domain will hardly rank even for the easiest search term.
Work on quality contents and you will be appreciated both by your readers and your Google.
One common way is writing an in depth content. This is probably the place where I tell you to write long form content.
Though long form contents is not a ranking factor for Google, you increase the chances of ranking for different variations of keywords.
Most internet marketers will recommend you write a minimum of 2,000 words, I’ll recommend you write till you satisfy a query.
Whether it takes you 800 words or 10,000 words – just write till you are satisfied.
There are cases of pages with 50 words outranking pages with hundreds of words. It doesn’t come as a surprise because Google has confirmed they don’t count words in a page.
That said, ensure that you write are least 300 words in a post just to be on the safe site.
Remember, thin content can demote your sites ranking prowess in SERP.
Use LSI keywords and Synonyms
For readers that don’t understand what LSI means, it is “Latent Semantic Indexing”.
These are basically keywords that are semantically related to your primary keyword.
Contrary to popular belief, they are NOT just synonym or keywords that are similar in meaning.
Even when LSI does not mean synonym, a combination of both is one powerful on page SEO trick that will get you to the front of SERP faster.
Why LSI and Keyword Synonyms?
There is a reason why it is important you add LSIs and synonyms as part of your on-page SEO drive.
Remember we wrote earlier that you should write a post in a way that helps both humans and machine understand what a page is all about.
Well, LSI and synonyms are all about helping the bots understand what your post is all about faster.
LSI keywords are also quality indicators that a page is thorough in explaining a topic.
With these synonyms and LSI keywords, you attack a topic from all possible points of view in the eyes of bots.
This way it assumes your page is better quality and will definitely contain information users are looking for.
3 Ways To Gather LSI Keywords For Your Post
If you are still wondering what LSI keywords are and how you can gather them, well it is simple.
There are three ways you can get these LSI keywords to add to your page:
- Google Autocomplete search terms
You will always notice that before you finish type a search term in Google, the box automatically suggest possible keywords for you.
Some of them will be related to your intended search term while some will not.
Those search terms are your first set of LSI key terms to add to your page.
You can take out your pen and write them down.
- Keywords at the bottom of a SERP
After searching for your preferred keyword phrases, when you scroll to the end of the page, you will notice other suggestions too.
Some of them will be the same with the ones you see in auto-suggestion terms.
As you click each LSI term, more LSI keywords will be made available.
This is the second way you can use to gather some related keywords for your post.
- Online tools
There is an online tool I use in gathering LSI keywords for my posts.
You should check out lsigraph.com. They offer free version and paid version too.
There is a limited number of times you can search for chosen term per day of you use free version.
However, they have been really helpful to thousands of internet marketer in ranking high.
What To Do After Getting These LSI Keywords
You have the option of using these headlines as headers for a topic or you add them naturally in your post.
Whichever way, ensure that you have them in your post.
They are strong on page indicators and optimization technique that proves your page contains all information about the topic you are writing on.
Add Value To Pages With Ordered Lists, Images, Videos And Tables
There are certain things a page will have which can help readers interact with the pages better.
Certain things you can add to your posts to improve its on page factors are:
- Ordered lists
- Tables (where necessary)
Images do not only engages your users, they pass messages in more ways than words can.
Adding video is another on page SEO technique that can increase users’ time on a page.
Remember that improving user experience is the main goal here.
Users spending more time on a page is another positive indicator that they value what you have to offer.
This can get you ranking higher in SERP.
Ordered list is one sure way to get users’ attention to a post. With ordered list you can break down a really long post and make it seem short for users with short attention span.
Tables can be used to clearly explain certain terms.
Writers that see the need for tables know when to add them to their post.
If tables are necessary for a post, ensure you add them – they can improve page usability and interaction from users.
If you need tables to clearly express a topic, ensure you add them because it can help you rank better.
You are the writer – so you should know what’s needed to clearly express a topic and help users find answers they are looking for.
Update Contents On Your Site Accordingly
Freshness of a site is another strong on page SEO technique because Google values site freshness.
Freshness of a site is same when you add new contents to a site and when you update old contents.
Abandoned blogs tend to loss ranking with time because if you don’t update your site regularly Google will demote your site with time.
You should identify your high ranking pages and keep them updated at least three times a year.
Ensure that you disclose the page modification dates openly.
Bots will know automatically spot the update but indicating it on the page is for openness to readers.
Identify those pages that are of low quality and don’t rank at all, you either edit them to improve their quality or get rid of them.
Low quality posts, scrapped contents and higher percentage of copied content on a site can affect your site ranking in general.
When majority of posts on your site is of high quality, your search ranking will improve.
Updating your site regularly either by posdoorting new contents or updating old posts is important to maintain site ranking in Google.
Be Cautious With Affiliate Links And Ads
Applying caution when inserting ads and affiliate links to your pages is another on page SEO technique we’ll talk about in this section.
Google has clearly stated that sites built only to make money is spam.
When ads are over shadowing your main contents, Google sees your page as spam and ranks you lower.
When there are more affiliate links than main content of a page, your page is seen as spam and ranked lower.
When writing a post, try to solve users’ problem by answering their questions.
As you answer questions in your post, it is okay to link to products and services you promote if they can further help users.
Also, ensure that you have clear disclaimers about your affiliate links and non-intrusive ads.
Be honest with your site visitors that you get commissions from links to products you promote.
Honesty is one sure way to build trust with both humans and Google.
Be moderate when adding affiliate links and ads to a page.
Stuffing your pages with affiliate link with the hope of making money only, this can negatively affect users’ experience and Google doesn’t want that.
They have an algorithm for ad spam pages and can spot them easily.
Ensure you build quality pages and don’t insert ads so much that they push the main content down.
Ensure your ads are not intrusive and get rid of your pop-ups and interstitial ads. Your page will be marked as spam for them and your whole site ranking might suffer for it.
There is an algorithm for pop-ups and interstitial so I recommend you get rid of them also.
On a personal note, I find pop-ups and interstitial disturbing and I think lots of users feel the same.
Link To Related Contents On Your Site
Interlinking is a strong on page optimization technique that will not only help your site rank higher in SERP, but also help bots crawl your site better.
There is a reason why interlinking is really important for on page SEO.
When you interlink other pages on your site using relevant anchor text, it tells Google that you have related posts on such topic.
Related post means two things:
- Users are most likely to find the answers they are seeking in your site
- Portrays your site as an authority on the topic
These are on-page factors that improve trust on your site both from Google and humans.
It also improves time on site, users’ experience and reduces bounce rate which improves ranking.
Some writers might tell you time on site is a ranking factor, others will tell you bounce rate is a ranking factor.
Google has not come out to state literally that these are ranking factor, but one thing is sure, they have an algorithm for user experience and both time on site and bounce rate are all signals for user experience.
If more users click the back button immediately after clicking on your link in search results, it means you have a low quality page and you will be ranked lower than site with high quality page.
One way of increasing time on site and improving user experience is by interlinking posts in your site.
Add high-quality and Relevant External Links
External link to high quality page for referencing purposes is another on page SEO optimization tactic that can help you rank high.
Remember that the end game is building a page that satisfies users and answer their questions.
A link to a resource that further explains their query proves your page is of high quality.
This way you get ranked because you page contains what users are looking for.
However, if you must link to an external source, ensure that it is a high quality page.
Though high quality page might come from a site with high domain authority or page rank, but it is not always the case.
If you find a page that is of high quality, you can link to it not minding its domain authority or page rank.
You don’t want to be suspected for shady link building practice or else all sites involved will be deindexed by Google.
Here’s another catch, ensure the site you linked to is related to the topic the page discusses.
Linking a page that is not in any way related to the topic you are writing is suspicious.
It could affect quality score of a page which might lead to low ranking.
If there are more pages in your site linking to pages that are off topic, the whole site gets low rating.
This can affect the general ranking status of all pages in the site.
This is why SEO agencies might recommend you get rid of low quality pages and disvow malicious links.
They can negatively affect the quality rating of the whole site.
With proper optimization of pages and the whole site, most clients have seen significant rise in their organic traffic.
Each page you publish should be checked for quality. You don’t want one or more low quality pages to affect the whole site’s ranking.
Include The Keyword Phrase In A Short URL
Your target keyword in your URL is another on page SEO technique that can help Google understand your site better.
That aside, it also helps with click thru rate in SERP.
I wrote an article on the how removing stop words in slug affect ranking.
In that post, I made mention of how building quality page is the most important on page SEO factor to consider.
Length of link should be attended to later on.
However, I told my readers that shorter URL seems more professional and most top ranking sites use it.
So if you must copy something from these top ranking sites, ensure it is their style and not their posts.
Personally I don’t think Google puts more emphasis on the length of a link.
That said, it looks professional tidy from a user’s point of view.
Have your target keyword phrases in your link, you never can tell what you will help you get ranked higher.
Use Your H Tags Properly
. Another on page SEO technique I will talk about is H tags.
In the past tags used to have enough power to get you ranked. In fact, it was as effective as keyword stuffing.
SEO agencies, bloggers and internet marketers understood this and abused it to the extent that Google had to do something about it.
Now tags no long have so much power on ranking as they once had.
That said, this does not take away their importance in optimizing a page for SEO.
There is a reason why most sites still use H tags despite their low strengths to rank a page.
The fact remains that H tags give your page some order and organization.
It helps users browse through pages easily and based on headlines and topic.
This improves user experience that Google can rank you for.
How would you love to read a page without a header to help you understand which section of the site you are on and what is being discussed.
H tags are as important as they once were just that they don’t have as much influence in ranking as they once had.
In fact, I don’t think I can write a post without my header tags.
I do ignore the H1 tag and continue my post with H2 tags.
Subheadings go into the H3 tags while a sub-subheading goes into H4 tag.
You want to use your tags the right way so you don’t confuse search engine bots on what header is the main header and which ones are the subheadings.
Ensure you add your H tags properly for improved user experience and also for machines.
Have Basic Pages On Your Site
Ranking a page high on search engine is most times about trust.
Google wants to know if they can trust your domain.
They want to ensure low quality pages from scammers and fraud sites are not ranked high in SERP.
This is why Google demands that some basic pages must be on a site for a domain to seen as serious.
These are just the basics.
But it goes to prove that a site is legit and ready for business. When you have a trusted domain, ranking becomes easy for you.
So ensure that you make your site open enough for users to fully understand who they are dealing with.
Monitor User Generated Contents Properly
By user generated contents I mean posts from users that are not staffs or owners of the site.
These contents can come in form of comments left by visitors or posts from other registered users of your site.
You don’t want to have them posting spam contents which can affect the site in general.
If Google understands that there are lots of spam activities taking place in the site, it gives it a low rating and ranks it low in SERP.
This is why you should ensure you moderate users’ comments before you have them published.
If your site accepts registration, ensure an administrator goes through a post submitted by members before approval to be published.
The post should meet up to your sites standards and should be of high quality.
You don’t want Google thinking that you are offering spammers opportunity to build shady links with your domain.
You also don’t want your site to be seen as a content farm where almost any kind of post can appear.
If this is confirmed, you might loss ranking fast and so will most pages in your site.
Pay Attention To Site Security Issues (Implement https)
Improving site security is one factor that can help with your on page SEO optimization.
Google wants to make sure that users are visiting a secure site.
It is recommend you get an SSL certificate for your site which is the implementation of https:// to your domain name.
Google has said that very soon, it will start indicating that sites that don’t have SSL certificate are not secure.
It already published that https in domain name is now a ranking factor.
So you want to ensure that while you are working hard to build the perfect pages for your clients, your site is secure for them to visit.
Site security is more important if you are store users’ information and data.
Every user will want to know if your site is safe enough to secure their data and personal information.
Invest in an SSL certificate because it will help with your ranking.
